Cool Cisco “Cheat Sheets”

August 14th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in CCIE

I came across these “Cheat Sheets” on different network protocols on the PacketLife website while watching some CCIE training materials. Pretty cool stuff, I’m going to print copies of these and keep them at my desk for reference. There are all sorts of sheets, including BGP, EIGRP, OSPF, IPV6, MPLS and lots of others. I’m just delaying my CCIE study time, so I figured I’d post a couple cool videos.

No one with any sense of adventure?

August 11th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in personal

I got bored last night, which means that I was looking for some excuse not to do any cleaning up around the house. I was in the mood to have a bit of human interaction, but not of the real-time variety. I just don’t really like being on the phone, cause I am a terrible multi-tasker. This means if I find myself on the phone or somewhat on IM, everything else in my life kinda gets put on hold until I’m done. I have tried doing both, but I end up entertwining the two, forgetting what I was doing, or agreeing to whatever it is that was said to me, sometimes with detrimental results. A recent conversation while I was trying to finish completing a task while chatting on the phone had me replying, “Well thats good” to a friend who was telling me about her being groped on the streets of New York.

Taking that into consideration I decided an email exchange would allow me the ability to get to know some people, while still leaving time for my tasks. Needing to be efficient, I decided that the best way to go about this was in a group setting, so that I can chat with multiple people all at the same time. This lead me to coming up with the idea for a 20 questions on craigslist post. The idea was simple. 20 people on a message board, each person asks a question and you all get to see what the other people respond. Maximum amount of interaction in the minimum amount of time.

Now, all I needed was 19 more people. How many people showed up? Well, I got 1 email requesting the address. Where is everyone’s sense of adventure, or willingness to try something new?

Chicago and AirVenture

August 8th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

I’m just getting recovered from my Chicago and AirVenture ‘08 trip even though I got back on Tuesday. I was very plesantly surprised at both legs of the Journey as Chicago is a beautiful city, and downtown seems very clean and safe compared to the other large cities I’ve visited. Airventure was a shock too, as I was not prepared for the sheer size of the show. I could have spent much more time looking at everything, but we only had a couple days, so I just scratched the surface. I do have to admit, being around all the pilots and planes, that I really want to learn to fly something. Maybe after the CCIE…

Here are some pictures from the trip for your viewing pleasure.

Injuries, Goals, and …

July 27th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in CCIE, Goals, Network TAO

Its been a week or so since my last post, as I’ve found myself injured during a Rollerblading accident. I mostly just sprained my wrist, but being that I end up on a PC most of the day at work, it has taken a bit longer to heal than I’d like it to. Its mostly better now, although I seem to find some way to re-injure it on a daily basis.

I’m back on track with my CCIE prep again though… My goal is to take the written sometime at the end of september, coinciding with the completion of Volume I of the training materials I’ve bought. I’m going to give weekly updates of my progress, so here is my current progress.

CCIE Volume 1
# of Tasks    Completed    % Complete
BGP                28           3                11%
Switching        50           41               82%
EIGRP             14            0                0%
Frame Relay     20            0                0%
IP Services      25            0                0%
IPV6               5             0                0%
OSPF              22            0                0%
QoS               22             0                0%
RIP                12             0                0%
Multicast        13             0                0%
Security         14             0                0%

Totals            225           44               20%

# Remaining    181

Maybe next time I’ll be a bit less lazy and use a proper table, but for now you get the idea..

Lastly… work on the other site is slow, but steady. I’m having the logo work done now, and I’m quite pleased. Click on the ‘more’ button to see the first revision..

Beast of a Day… And the Beginning

July 17th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in CCIE, Goals

I’ve inherited a network that I am ashamed of. At first glance that seems like a great opportunity to make a name for myself. Step in, clean things up, show how a network should be run, then garner all the praise that comes along with that. After a couple months I’ve come to the realization that I have 2 options… maintain the crap that I have now and work semi-normal hours or try to do something amazing, which will probably be under-appreciated, and work an ungodly schedule.

I think I have decided to go the maintain route. While, I must say it drives me nutty every time I think about just throwing something together instead of planning things out like they should be, my sanity and life outside work is a higher priority at this point.

I also have decided that this is a good reason to start my quest for the CCIE again. Nothing like hating what you are doing to motivate one to excel. I signed up for the end to end program over at Internetwork Expert after checking out some of their stuff online. So far I’ve only viewed the intro class, but I plan on doing a bit every night, till I find myself the member of the CCIE club.

The new site…

July 16th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

I’ve been feverishly working on a new site, because well.. I need another one, even though I havent finished this one. The new site has a goal though, whereas this is mostly just a random blog about whatever I feel like posting. You can check out the site at www.networktao.com, but the layout and theme is still not finished. To be honest, I’m mostly posting this just to test the whole pingback feature, when linking to The First Real Post over there.

A Glass o’ Wine

July 2nd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

Having a glass of wine before bed, cause its been a hell of a week already. I figure the wine will work on my headache as well as taking some Tylenol. I have been working on my Final Cut Pro skills, and made some progress on the lab I’m setting up at work.

Still waiting on some responses from the girls I met this weekend, but its going to be nice to have a couple days off.

A clear pattern…

June 29th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Goals

I’ve been doing a good bit of soul searching, trying to figure out just what I want out of life, how to achieve whatever it is that I want and the best strategy for making that a reality. As a part of this task, I’ve been reading various books, and they all seem to have a pretty similar pattern. Dream big, win big… dream for what is already in reach and thats what you’ll get. I’ll expand on this a bit more, but for now, even though this info has been in front of my face all along, I feel like I am just starting to understand it.

Dreaming is hard work!

June 26th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Goals

I’m on my way to living a more exciting life, through some methods which I’ll describe later, but it has occurred to me that living the “Normal” life that everyone else seems to be okay with has seriously killed my affinity to Dream beyond the mediocre. I sat down last night to dream of where I’d like to go, what I’d like to see, and what things I’d like to acquire, but could barely come up with a list, and most of the things I did come up with were just simple things I could do now.

My task for myself today then is simple… to come up with a list of places I’d like to go, things I’d like to see, and toys that I want to play with. Got any ideas?
